Anzac Fallen honoured at The Ballance House
/Men and women from this country, who served with New Zealand and Australian forces were honoured in the Anzac Service at The Ballance House on Sunday.
At the outbreak of the Great War, 1914 -18, many, who had moved ‘down under’ for a better life, volunteered to help preserve preserve freedom and democracy. Enlisting in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, Anzac, to help repel German, Austrian and Turkish aggression.
Anzac Day was first designated to recall those who fought in WW1 battles such as Gallipoli, but now is a remembrance of all who served with the Pacific nations in wars and on peace keeping duties through to the present day.
Those taking part at The Ballance House included Gurkhas, sea and army cadets plus veterans with music from Kellswater Flute Band and a Royal Irish bugler and a piper.
The address was delivered by the Rev Jason Kernohan, All Saints’ Eglantine. Other speakers included Paul Hewitt, chair Ulster New Zealand Centre based at The Ballance House.and Caroline Keenan NZ Hon Consult in NI.
Wreath laying, announced by Brian Sloan, Lisburn RB, reflected the strong links between NI and NZ as over a dozen organisations took part.
